Union Beach Officer Killed When He Struck Telephone Pole

An off-duty Union Beach police officer was killed when he struck a telephone pole, authorities said.

Detective Cpl. Timothy Kelly, Jr., 29, died in the crash.

He was described as a "rising star" by his department.

The single motor vehicle crash occurred at 1:57 a.m. on Sunday, July 17 on State Highway 36 West just past Grand Avenue, according to Atlantic Highlands police.

Police found a 2010 Honda Civic which had crashed into a telephone pole.

Police attempted lifesaving efforts but the driver was pronounced dead at the crash scene by paramedics.

"The Atlantic Highlands Police Department offers our deepest condolences to the Union Beach Police Department and the Kelly Family. Rest in peace Detective Corporal Timothy Kelly."
